The casting call was an OPEN CASTING and simply put, social media truly brought out the ugly and racism out of people and I feel bad for Diop who has had to experience all of this. Like I said in class I think people fail to realize that the photo that leaked is in street gear, off camera and based around 1970’s-80’s so, of course, she’s not gonna look cool at that moment.

This is totally inexcusable as Starfire is an alien and at the end of the day if Anna Diop does a good job and kills this role (which I think she will) her skin color should not be an issue, especially since she’s an orange alien and has been, like you said, based on models of color like Naomi Campbell.

As we discussed in class I think people were definitely being racist or being racist using the horrible outfit choice, and bad photo as an excuse. Personally, I think that Anna Diop looks really cool in her promo photos and I remember seeing the negative backlash all over social media when the paparazzi photo of her leaked and being disgusted at the horrible comments people were leaving. If they change her to be permanently orange/glowing, would it make the situation better or worse?Īs a huge fan of Starfire (and Teen Titans in general), I really enjoyed this pop talk and glad you brought this into class.Do you think this would have been as controversial if the photos that leaked had the different/better costume?.Do you think it would have been as controversial if she was Hispanic?.Why couldn’t they just cast an orange girl with glowing green eyes that can fly? Questions Simply put, this whole situation is ridiculous. The Casting Call for StarfireĪlso in an ironic twist, several artists who have drawn Starfire in the past have come forward and stated that they used photos black models as a model for her. The producers didn’t just choose to make her black, instead they held auditions for people of all ethnicities and simply chose the best actress that fit the part. Some even accused the show of “blackwashing” Starfire. Most of these comments ignore the challenges of casting an orange alien on a limited budget for TV. The hateful comments started back up again.
